If you’re new to gardening, it can be daunting to know where to start. You know that mulching is important, but you don’t know how much you need or how often you should be replacing it. DSATCO Mulch has provided a quick and easy guide on garden mulch to help you get started on your garden.

When Should You Replace Your Mulch?

While this is one of the most common questions when it comes to mulching. For growing a productive garden, it is recommended that you re-mulch your summer crop and winter crop. That way any remaining mulch can be turned into the soil to add organic matter and air pockets into the soil. Once your veggies or fruit have sprouted and you can see leaves poking out the soil, then is the right time to mulch.

For everything else, mature fruit trees, ornamentals, natives, we recommend mulching around mid-spring to keep the soil cool before the summer heat bakes the soil and the living life in the soil.

What Kind of Mulch Lasts Longest?

What mulch lasts longest is a question that is often asked. Mulches that last years are usually not doing the soil any good and are for decoration purposes only. If you want to grow healthy strong plants a good mulch should break down within the year.

What Happens if You Don’t Replace Your Mulch?

If mulch is left to break down long enough, it will no longer serve its purpose as insulation for the soil and plant roots. It can leave your garden open to disease and parasites. The soil will become more easily eroded, allowing weeds to break through. Still, you should have your mulch for at least a year before it needs to be replaced. If you prefer a very low-maintenance garden, inorganic mulch doesn’t require much upkeep, though it also doesn’t provide nutrients for the soil like all natural mulch.

A good mulch like the Lupin and Triple-C mulches are, slowly breakdown and improve the soil condition as they turn to almost a compost for the soil.
